I am back! I went to my first band rehearsal for ages last night. And it was SO ANNOYING! (Please note that in all of these songs I was sight-reading.)
We started with this piece called “Just a Closer Walk” and I’m too cool for key changes so I ignored the four sharps I should be playing in. Oops.
Then we did “Thank God for Little Girls” in which I did the same thing as the above song.
Third we played “Bare Necessities” from the Jungle Book where there wasn’t a rep part so I ended up playing 2nd. Awkward.
To finish of we played the “Muppet Show” theme where there was also no rep. part. We found it after I had committed the 2nd part to memory. How it ended up next to the 3rds I have no idea..?
Anyway, I’ll try and keep up a post-a-play method (so you should have an update every Monday, possibly Friday and definitely every Saturday). See you soon!
Loving this band at the moment! They are a jazz quartet and I am listening to their album “Creation” right now. Amazing. I love that sax.
Louis Armstrong springs to mind – who else can sing and play the trumpet that well? EVER?
That’s all, just a random thought.
What is it with MK at the moment? I’ll explain…
Recently at MK Brass, we have been playing old pieces like Amazing Grace and Hey Jude (Beatles). I walked in late this week and what do we play? As I stroll through the doors, I find the band playing “Singin’ in the Rain”. Then, when we have played that half to death, we have a shot at “Penny Lane” – yet another Beatles song! What is it with the oldie tunes?
As if that wasn’t enough, these pieces go higher than “The Magnificent Seven”, which doesn’t go lower than an F (top of the stave). Grr…
That’s all ’till the Friday after next as I’m away. Bye!
Brass band was a bit dull today. NO PLAYING. All we did was eat chocolate cookies and talk. It was the last day of the musical term, but still. 20 mins wasted.
I do like chocolate cookies, though. Nom nom.
That’s all, bye!
The band had a gig at a classic car rally outside Horwood House today. Chilling. Wind bit through our band polo shirts and all we had was a marquee with no walls. My folder cover ripped off halfway through, which helped matters. We played quite a few pieces, many of which you may recognise:
- The Lion King (Can You Feel the Love Tonight)
- Eye of the Tiger
- Jurassic Park: Main Theme
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Hey Jude
- Amazing Grace
- By the the Time I Get to Phoenix (printing error)
- A couple of others that I don’t remember.
I hate the score of By the the Time I Get to Phoenix. In stead of Repiano or Rep., they wrote “Repieno”, and instead of Flugel they wrote “Flügal”. Really?
Anyway, I think today was a great gig. Next rehearsal on Friday, so speak to you then, or maybe sooner if Brass Band (the school club) is on.
